FAQs

What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Veterinary physiotherapy is the use of physical techniques to treat animals, helping them recover from injuries, surgeries, or managing chronic conditions. It can also enhance performance in animals like horses. Treatments include manual therapy, exercise therapy, and specialized modalities like electrotherapy and laser therapy.

Veterinary physiotherapy can assist with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Post-surgical recovery (e.g., orthopedic or soft tissue surgery)

  • Chronic pain and conditions like arthritis

  • Muscle imbalances and stiffness

  • Neurological issues affecting movement

  • Performance enhancement for athletes (e.g., horses in competition)

Treatment sessions typically last between 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the animal’s needs and the type of treatment. The frequency and duration of sessions will be determined based on the condition being treated and your animal's progress.

How long are our Sessions?

How soon will I see Results?

The results of physiotherapy can vary depending on the condition being treated, but many animals start to show improvement after just a few sessions. In some cases, ongoing treatment may be required for long-term results. We will work closely with you to monitor your animal’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

We aim to make each session as comfortable and stress-free as possible for your animal. While some treatments may involve mild sensations, like a gentle stretch or mild electrical stimulation, they should not cause pain. If your animal experiences any discomfort, we will adjust the treatment accordingly.

At OP Vet Physio, we want to ensure your first appointment is as smooth and comfortable as possible for both you and your animal.

Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Initial Consultation
Your first visit will begin with a thorough consultation. We’ll discuss your animal's medical history, any current concerns, and their specific needs. Whether it's injury recovery, performance enhancement, or general mobility issues, we take time to understand the full picture.

  2. Physical Assessment
We will conduct a detailed physical assessment of your animal, checking for areas of discomfort, weakness, or imbalances. For horses, this may involve watching them move or assessing their posture. For small animals, we will gently examine their joints, muscles, and range of motion.

  3. Treatment Plan
Based on the assessment, we’ll create a customized treatment plan that’s tailored to your animal’s condition and goals. This plan may include a combination of physiotherapy techniques such as manual therapy, rehabilitation exercises, and advanced modalities.

  4. Treatment Session
After discussing the plan, we will begin the first treatment session. Our approach is gentle and non-invasive, prioritizing your animal’s comfort. We’ll ensure you are fully informed about each step of the treatment and answer any questions you may have.

  5. Follow-Up and Care Advice
At the end of the session, we will discuss the next steps and offer guidance on at-home care or exercises that may complement the treatment. We will schedule follow-up sessions as needed to track progress and adjust the plan accordingly.

For Horses

Preparing for a physiotherapy session for your horse is easy and straightforward. Here's what to do:

  • Have your horse ready: Make sure your horse is clean and comfortable. If possible, have them in a stable or area where they can be easily accessed for treatment.

  • Provide medical history: If your horse has had any injuries, surgeries, or previous treatments, please bring relevant medical records or any information that will help us understand their needs.

  • Prepare the environment: A quiet, safe, and calm area is ideal for the session. This helps your horse feel relaxed and ensures the best outcome from the treatment.

  • Ask questions: If you have any concerns or questions about the treatment, feel free to ask. We’re here to help!

For Small Animals

If you’re bringing a small animal in for their first appointment at our Monte Vista clinic, here’s what to do:

  • Bring medical records: If your pet has any previous injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions, please bring their medical history. This will help us tailor the treatment to their specific needs.

  • Comfortable treatment: Bring your pet in a carrier or on a leash, depending on their size and temperament. If they are nervous or anxious, having their favourite treats, toys, or blanket can help them feel more at ease.

  • Prepare your questions: This is a great time to discuss any concerns or ask about your pet’s specific condition, the treatments we offer, and what to expect from the physiotherapy process.

  • Arrival time: Arrive a little earlier than your appointment time to allow your pet to settle in and become comfortable in the treatment room.
